Can I tell if a guy likes me by the way he kisses?

Sometimes, but not always. Many women believe that tender, gentle, almost feathery kisses signal a guy's romantic interest. On the other hand, guys who are just interested in sex, it is often believed, are more apt to rush on to using their tongue in a kiss. That line from "The Shoop Shoop Song"-"If you want to know if he loves you so, it's in his kiss"-has undoubtedly contributed to this reliance on kissing as an indicator of a man's true feelings.

In reality, things are a little more complicated. First of all, you're not thinking clearly when you're kissing, so your judgment is liable to be biased. And while the song lyrics may sound terrific, they're also somewhat misleading. Sure, a gentle kiss may indicate true romantic interest, and a tongue kiss may signal nothing more than sexual desire. But guys who have predatory interests can also kiss gently, especially at the outset. They aren't idiots-they know what you like, and they can kiss as romantically as the best of them. Which isn't to say that you should become cynical? Just keep your wits about you and don't get lulled into an over reliance on kissing style as an indicator of a guy's true romantic interest.

It's much more important, especially at the outset of a relationship, to observe how a guy talks and looks at you during a conversation. Admittedly, kissing style may indicate something about how he feels. But the way he talks and listens is usually a much more reliable way to measure his interest. A guy who keeps glancing at other women or whose attention isn't focused on you is probably not your best bet. But a guy who talks in a friendly way, maintains appropriate eye contact, laughs easily, and is able to carry on a good conversation by listening as well as talking is probably more romantically interested in you. So don't just rely on his kissing technique. Observe how he interacts with you in conversations and whether he shares your interests. Often that's an even better indicator of true compatibility.
