Dating is plenty hard as it is, fraught with anxiety about whether you are good-looking enough, rich enough or intelligent enough to attract a desirable partner. Now there is yet another thing to worry about; the mere sound of your voice could signal that you are a loser.

In a study conducted at a University at Albany , State University of New York, 149 students listened to recordings of strangers counting from 1 to 10 and rated the attractiveness of each voice. Body measurements of the speakers were taken and about half gave sexual histories. Female with attractive voices tended to have the classically athletic V-shaped figure. Subjects whose tone crooned "fly me to the moon" had more sexually partners and were sexually active earlier than their "pass the milk" cohorts.

People's voices are shaped by the same hormones that influence sex drive and changes in the body during puberty. And evolution may have adapted voices to aid in mate selection, especially at night in the ages before candles and light bulbs illuminated wooing faces and bodies.

For modern-day singles, it might be fine to have a blind date, but not a deaf date. Speak to a person on the phone before you meet; his/her voice can tell you a lot.
